Sandpaper is primarily used for smoothing and finishing of surfaces. These can be wood, metal or plastic surfaces. It can also remove imperfection in wood and help to refine wooden surfaces. Other uses of sandpaper include stripping paint and prepping a surface to ensure proper adhesion of glues or new coats of paint. It is better to use sanding blocks when more control and a uniform finish are needed, particularly on flat or large surfaces. Sanding blocks are especially advantageous in situations where a precise and smooth result is essential, such as when preparing a surface for painting, refinishing furniture, or repairing drywall, as they help to prevent uneven wear and surface gouges that can occur when sanding by hand.
